Required Exam Score Calculator

Enter current grade, exam weight, and target course grade. See the minimum score required on that exam.

Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Enter values to see the result

  1. 1

    Current course grade

    Percent standing on work already counted toward the grade.

  2. 2

    Exam weight

    How much of the course this exam is worth (percent).

  3. 3

    Target grade

    The overall percent you want after the exam.

Why compute the required score

Guessing “I need a 90 on the test” ignores how much the exam actually counts.

Same weighted algebra

Uses needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w with w = exam weight ÷ 100.

Any remaining exam

Midterm, unit test, or final. Weight is what matters, not the label.

Clear pass/fail of the target

Flags when you need over 100% or when you already have the target locked in.

When to use this tool

Unit tests with fixed weight

When the syllabus lists Exam 2 as 20% of the course.

Grade recovery

See the minimum to climb from a C into a B.

Study prioritization

Know whether a small bump or a large leap is required.

Required exam score formula

Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

w = exam weight percent ÷ 100. Current grade must reflect completed work only.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the required exam score?

needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the exam’s share of the course as a decimal.

Example: current 78%, exam 25%, target 80% → (80 − 78×0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 86%.

Can I use this for more than one remaining exam?

Only if you treat all remaining weight as one combined exam. For multiple categories with different scores, model them in the weighted grade calculator.

What if my current grade already includes a zero for the exam?

Recalculate current grade without that zero first. Otherwise the required score will be wrong.

How is this different from the final exam calculator?

Same math. Prefer final exam grade calculator when the remaining item is specifically the final.

Are my numbers stored?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.
