    Enter points earned

The score you (or a student) got on the assignment, quiz, or test.

  2. 2

    Read the percentage

See earned ÷ possible × 100, plus a letter and 4.0 GPA for that percent.

Why convert points to a percentage

Most gradebooks and transcripts report percent, not raw points.

The standard school formula

Percentage = (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100. Same math teachers use on paper.

Letter and GPA in one step

Maps the percent to a common US plus/minus letter scale and 4.0 points.

Works for any point scale

10-point quizzes, 50-point labs, or 200-point exams. Only the ratio matters.

When to use this calculator

After grading a stack

Turn 37/40 into 92.5% without a spreadsheet.

Student check-ins

Show how many points were missed and what letter that earns.

Mixed assignment scales

Normalize different totals before averaging or weighting later.

Grade percentage formula

Percentage = (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100

Points possible must be greater than zero. Missed points = possible − earned.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate grade percentage?

Divide points earned by points possible, then multiply by 100.

Example: 42 earned out of 50 possible → (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.

Can earned points be higher than possible?

Yes, if your course allows extra credit. The percentage can go above 100%. The letter table still treats anything at or above 97% as A+.

What letter grade scale do you use?

A common US scale: A+ (97–100), A (93–96), A− (90–92), then B+/B/B−, C+/C/C−, D+/D/D−, and F below 60, with matching 4.0 GPA points.

Your school may use different cutoffs.

Is this the same as a quiz or test score calculator?

Same math. This page is the general points-to-percent tool. The quiz and test pages use the same formula with quiz- or test-focused copy.

Are my scores stored?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.
