# How to add a Short text question

Short text is a single line. Use it when you need a few words, not a paragraph
and not a validated email or phone number.

1. ADD IT

In Build, click Add a question, then choose Short text. See How to add questions
[https://formms.help.center/article/1016-how-to-add-questions].

2. ON THE FORM

The field is on the canvas. Question settings opens so you can write the prompt,
add hint text, and mark it required.

3. WHAT IT IS FOR

People type one line. Typical uses: company name, city, a short code, or a
one-line answer.

4. EDIT AND REQUIRE

Click the field to change the wording. Hover it to duplicate or delete. Required
questions show a red asterisk. Optional ones do not.

If the answer should be an email, phone, or a number, pick that type instead so
the field can check the format.

5. ASK AI

In create a form with AI
[https://formms.help.center/article/1013-how-to-create-a-form-with-ai], describe
the form and name this type. On a form you already have, open Chat to Edit (the
pencil next to Add a question) and ask in a sentence.

Example:

> Add a short text question for the company name.

6. READ THE DRAFT

The helper replies with a Draft card. Each field shows its type. Check that
Short text is in the list. Click Create this form when you want it. Close if you
were only trying a prompt. That does not add a form.
